  1. Winter Wonderland Nature Walk

    Experience the quiet beauty of Secrest Arboretum in winter. Join Jason Veil, Curator, and Paul Snyder, Operations Manager and Master Gardener Coordinator, for an expert-led hike through the Arboretum. Discover the unique characteristics of trees and landscapes that shine in the colder months, and learn how Secrest’s plant collections adapt and transform with the season. After the walk, warm up with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate while enjoying conversation with our Arboretum experts.

  2. People learning to graft trees

    Jan 29, 2026, 8:00am - 12:00pm

    Learn the what, why and how behind the art of plant grafting. This hands-on workshop allows participants to practice various grafting techniques. Rootstock and scion will be provided. Participants can take grafted plants home to nurture, and receive a grafting knife with registration. Pre-registration required. General grafting techniques will be taught that can be applied to fruit trees. We will not be grafting fruit trees in this workshop. FSA members should contact Paul Snyder for the discount code.

  3. Witch-hazel at Secrest Arboretum

    Feb 13, 2026, 1:00pm - 3:30pm

    Witchhazels signal the arrival of spring at Secrest! Come discover the numerous witchhazels in the Secrest collection. Experience the beauty and fragrance of these fascinating plants. The date of this workshop may be moved depending on weather conditions. In 2025, it was moved by four weeks in order to experience peak bloom. 

  4. Striped Maple Bark

    Feb 20, 2026, 1:00pm - 4:00pm

    Explore the quiet resilience and beauty of Secrest Arboretum in winter during this engaging workshop that blends science and seasonal observation. Led by Arboretum experts, this guided walk will highlight the ornamental textures of bark and branching structures, while also uncovering the ecological strategies plants use to survive cold, snow, and wind. Learn how trees adapt to winter conditions—from insulating bark and bud protection to root survival and microclimate advantages. 

  5. Person pruning tree

    Mar 5, 2026, 9:00am - 2:00pm

    This introductory workshop covers basic pruning techniques. Topics include when to prune, required tools, tool care and making  proper cuts. Participants will have the opportunity to practice pruning skills. How to prune fruit trees will not be covered in this workshop. Lunch will be provided. The worshop will be taught by ISA Certified Arborist, Phil Knopp, CFAES Wooster campus arborist.

    Mar 12, 2026, 1:00pm - 2:30pm

    Monthly tree walks feature all things trees.  A variety of topics will be covered, including proper selection and planting, insect pests and diseases. Please dress for the weather. Walks will cover large trees and small trees within the arboretum. These walks are led by arboretum staff. Registration encouraged but not required, it is helpful if we need to cancel the event due to severe weather events.
