    Monthly tree walks feature all things trees.  A variety of topics will be covered, including proper selection and planting, insect pests and diseases. Please dress for the weather. Walks will cover large trees and small trees within the arboretum. These walks are led by arboretum staff. Registration encourage but not required.

  2. Mar 7, 2024, 9:00am - 2:00pm

    This introductory workshop covers basic pruning techniques. Topics include when to prune, required tools, tool care and making  proper cuts. Participants will have the opportunity to practice pruning skills. How to prune fruit trees will not be covered in this workshop. Lunch will be provided.

    Witchhazels signal the arrival of spring at Secrest! Come discover the numerous witchhazels in the Secrest collection. Experience the beauty and fragrance of these fascinating plants. 

  4. Feb 8, 2024, 8:00am - 12:00pm

    Learn the what, why and how behind the art of plant grafting. This hands-on workshop allows participants to practice various grafting techniques. Rootstock and scion will be provided. Participants can take grafted plants home to nurture, and receive a grafting knife with registration. Pre-registration required. General grafting techniques will be taught that can be applied to fruit trees. We will not be grafting fruit trees in this workshop.

      Join the expert team from Ohio Division of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry for a seminar on January 22 from 9am-3pm on how to create an arboretum in your community. We will cover the overall ArbNet accreditation process, and then with lectures and activities, dive deeper into the required criteria to gain a better understanding of the subjects. By the end of the seminar you will be prepared to apply to ArbNet and get your park, cemetery, or garden accredited as a Level 1 arboretum.     esearch and experience show that proper pruning of young trees will greatly increase their structural health, beauty and longevity. Improper pruning can permanently disfigure a young tree, preventing it from ever becoming a mature specimen.  Done at the early stages of a tree’s growth, this pruning can be done quickly and easily without causing damage to the trees.

    Our Plant Family School this year will explore the details of the poaceae, an insect order, we'll discuss the problem with the name cedar and cypress, and learn about monogeneric families. Lunch and materials provided. Presented by: Paul Snyder, Roger Downer, Jason Veil, and Jim Chatfield.

    A Smorgasbord of landscape delights; edible landscaping at its most personal. A fun evening of sampling creative landscape (food) design. Past standouts include pawpaw crème brulee and trifle, ramp soup, the multiple creations of Lois Rose from medlar jam to crème de cassis, from bitter orange marmalade to kousa dogwood jam, aronia thumbprint cookies, autumn olive pate de fruits, Dolgo crabapple butter, and fringetree olives.
