  2. The World of Lichens

    Lichens cover 6-8% of the Earth’s land surface, but most people are unfamiliar with these life forms, which attach themselves to rocks, tree bark, or soil. A lichen is a combination of a fungus and either an alga or a cyanobacterium, and more than 15,000 species of lichens have been identified worldwide, including 3,600 in North America and over 700 kinds of lichen in Ohio.   This lichen program is being co-hosted by Secrest Arboretum and the Ohio Natural Areas & Preserves Association (ONAPA)

  4. CREATING A COMMUNITY ARBORETUM- PRESENTED BY ODNR DIVISION OF FORESTRY

      Join the expert team from Ohio Division of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry for a seminar on January 22 from 9am-3pm on how to create an arboretum in your community. We will cover the overall ArbNet accreditation process, and then with lectures and activities, dive deeper into the required criteria to gain a better understanding of the subjects. By the end of the seminar you will be prepared to apply to ArbNet and get your park, cemetery, or garden accredited as a Level 1 arboretum.   5. Young Tree Training

    esearch and experience show that proper pruning of young trees will greatly increase their structural health, beauty and longevity. Improper pruning can permanently disfigure a young tree, preventing it from ever becoming a mature specimen.  Done at the early stages of a tree’s growth, this pruning can be done quickly and easily without causing damage to the trees.

    Join Paul Snyder for an educational look at the art of collecting and successfully germinating seeds from woody plants. Time will be spent in the arboretum collecting seeds as well as processing those seeds. Participants will take home seeds they clean.

  9. Music in the Arboretum: Jerry Popiel, Songs from the 1960s and 1970s

    Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) and the Friends of the Secrest Arboretum close out their summer Music at the Arboretum concert series on Friday, August 18, 2023, with Avon Lake-based musician Jerry Popiel, in a program that will feature popular tunes from singer-songwriters from the 1960s and 1970s, including Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Dan Fogelberg, Cat Stevens and others.
