  1. How to Collect Seeds

    Join Paul Snyder for an educational look at the art of collecting and successfully germinating seeds from woody plants. Time will be spent in the arboretum collecting seeds as well as processing those seeds. Participants will take home seeds they clean.

    Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) and the Friends of the Secrest Arboretum close out their summer Music at the Arboretum concert series on Friday, August 18, 2023, with Avon Lake-based musician Jerry Popiel, in a program that will feature popular tunes from singer-songwriters from the 1960s and 1970s, including Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Dan Fogelberg, Cat Stevens and others.

    Time to take a break while gaining knowledge, CEU’s, both ISA Certified Arborist and ODA Pesticide credits. Bring your eyes, binoculars, cameras and questions for Dr. Treevorkian (AKA Jim Chatfield) while we explore the college grounds and landscapes searching for the elusive disease triangle.  

  8. Relationships Matter: Plant Style

    Plant families are a fundamental way to understand plant relationships, from what plants did entomologists study to see if they were susceptible to emerald ash borer (fellow members along with ash in the olive family), to which plants are susceptible to bacterial fireblight (members like apples and pears in the rose family), from which plants might you be able to graft one plant to another (only plants in the same family) to which plants such as blueberries are in the rhododendron family and thus tend to thrive only in acid soils?

  9. Guided Tree Walk

    Guided tree walks have been approved for the first half of the year! Hooray! Monthly tree walks feature all things trees.  A variety of topics will be covered, including proper selection and planting, insect pests and diseases. Please dress for the weather.

  10. Landscapes in Watercolor

    Come Paint "Landscapes in Watercolor" with Artist Cody Heichel.  Secrest Arboretum provides an endless opportunity to paint its landscapes of flowers, trees, birds, and gardens. Originally from the Wooster area, Cody Heichel is a member of the National, American, and Ohio Watercolor Societies and has exhibited in many art galleries, instructed painting workshops, and earned many awards. Cody is looking forward to coming back to Wooster and painting at Secrest Arboretum!
