Strawberry Parfait Crabapple

We had very good attendance at the Annual Meeting in October. The slate of candidates I mentioned in the last Newsletter were confirmed unanimously. All of us on the Board appreciate your continuing support. The plant sale followed immediately after the meeting and we had our second highest fall sale ever, grossing $12,702. We needed a good sale to ensure  adequate storage for the remaining plants.
Friends of Secrest Arboretum
Thanks to all who supported the annual Winterberry and Greens Sale. We planted additional winterberry plants a couple of years ago to help ensure supply into the future. Greens are  more problematic, and we are starting to look for a sustainable solution. We welcome suggestions. Friends does a variety of behind-the-scenes projects in support of Secrest. One of  them this winter is a total overhaul of our storage area which houses everything related to running the plant sale. We are also adding a lot of storage on wheels to make it easier on both staff and volunteers to set up and tear down plant sales, the garden fair, and other events.

The Secrest Select website (secrestselect.com) is now accessible. The nominating committee met in late October to review 25 nominations and narrowed the selection down to 6. These  have been sent to the Secrest Arboretum Support Council (SASC) for approval at their December meeting. Once approved we will be adding them to the website.

Another project of interest is being run through the SASC. If you have visited Secrest recently I hope that you have noticed the new informational signs and maps that are located at the three prominent entry points to the Arboretum. A committee of Matt Shultzman (Secrest staff), Jeni Filbrun (OSU - Curator of the United Titanium Bug Zoo), Laura Deeter (OSU Professor, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and the Sandy and Andy Ross Endowed Director of the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens), and me are developing content and standards for the third panel which allows for changing information such as upcoming events and seasonal interest. We will soon be looking for volunteers as we move this process into  production.

As always, please reach out to me at friendsofsecrest@gmail.com should you have questions about FSA or if you are interested in volunteering – whether as a board member or not.
